Educational Double Decker Bus

We were asked to create a teaching and training vehicle to promote healthy eating to school children, as part of the ongoing "Let's Grow" campaign

The bus needed to have 3 distinct areas, the most important being a planting area, where the children could learn about planting seeds, the second being an information area, where the children could watch a promotional DVD and complete a questionnaire, the third area being a small kitchen were the onboard staff could demonstrate cooking vegetables

Because of the features required we decided to modify a standard service bus, this being a lower cost solution to stripping out and re-fitting an existing promotional bus

Total build time was 13 weeks, during which the standard bus interior was removed new floor and wall coverings installed and the required features created

Mobile Greenhouse

The initial concept was to create a mobile greenhouse 'look' by removing roof and upperdeck wall panels and replacing them with clear acryilic panels, however budget, structural and branding constraints reduced this to removing and replacing roof panels. providing the bus with an 8m sunroof

Planting was achieved by installing a 6m long worktop to the upper deck the worktop had raised sides to hold the compost, the children were then shown how to plant seeds in the pots provided by an experianced gardner

To the lower deck we installed 'horseshoe' seating to the rear, the mid section being left open plan and a kitchen area to the forward section

To the rear wall we installed a 32" LCD TV connected to a DVD player, the same DVD player was connected to a smaller 21" LCD TV affixed to the the rear of the stairway

Electrical power was supplied by a 4.5kva generator installed in the front door space, access to the bus being by a purpose built middle doorway with adaptons for wheelchair access

Branded and "On the Road"

Last but not least the external branding was applied, this being a high detail vinyl wrap

The vehicle then undertook a 6 week tour of the UK with over 1,200 school children visiting the bus and local Morrisons store during the tour
